Jakobstad’s Rock History on Display in the Where the Music Began Exhibition

The opening of the exhibition Where the Music Began was celebrated on Wednesday, 24 June. The exhibition tells the story of the history of rock music in Jakobstad, often referred to as the “Liverpool of Finland”. It has been compiled from materials donated by people who helped shape the Jeppis phenomenon, including photographs, newspaper clippings, and their own memories and stories. The exhibition also features a reconstruction of a rehearsal room, illustrating the typical practice environment in Jakobstad during the 1960s and 1970s.

The opening evening brought together many people who were involved in the Jeppis phenomenon, along with their family members and others who witnessed the phenomenon from the sidelines. The programme included a panel discussion featuring three music enthusiasts who played in Jakobstad bands during the era of the Jeppis phenomenon. They shared memories and stories from the golden age of rock music in Jakobstad.

The exhibition Where the Music Began is on display at Musikcentralen (Jaakonkatu 39 A) from 25 June to 31 August 2026. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The exhibition has been organised in cooperation by the Cultural Services of the Town of Jakobstad, the Jakobstad Museum, and Wava Institute. The exhibition has been supported by Svenska kulturfonden and the Otto A. Malm Foundation.
