Outdoor Seating Areas 1 May–30 September
Are you planning a temporary outdoor café or terrace in the city centre during the summer of 2026?
Together with the city’s Municipal Engineering Department / Planning Department and the Technical Committee, Citygruppen rents out street areas that can be used for temporary outdoor seating by business owners.
Checklist for Terrace Builders
- Hire an authorized planner. The planner can also submit all attachments to the Municipal Engineering Department – terrasstillstand@jakobstad.fi
- Attachments: site plan, dimension drawings, construction drawings, necessary statements (property owner, neighbours, the rescue department).
- Standard solutions for fencing, furniture, colour scheme (photographs).
- The agreement for the outdoor seating area is made with Citygruppen r.f. after the Technical Committee and the Municipal Engineering Department have approved the plans.
- The terrace season ends on 30 September. At that time, all furniture, decorations, and fencing must be removed, and the street must be cleaned and tidied.

Contact Citygruppen regarding the area for the outdoor seating and prepare an agreement together. The agreement is signed only after the Technical Committee and the Municipal Engineering Department have approved the plans. https://citygruppen.fi/
PERMANENT TERRACES
If you want to build a permanent terrace, you must contact the Building Supervision Office: byggnadstillsynen@jakobstad.fi.
If you want to build a permanent terrace, you must also apply for a permit via Lupapiste.
Permanent outdoor seating areas must be maintained and adapted according to the season. Around Christmas, they may be decorated with lighting.
