World No Tobacco Day

WHO’s World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May. In 2026, the campaign highlights how the tobacco and nicotine industry seeks to attract new users, especially children and young people. Products are made more appealing through flavourings, sleek design, and targeted marketing, as well as by circumventing regulations.

The City of Jakobstad’s preventive substance abuse working group has also identified worrying signs of increasing nicotine product use among young people, particularly e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and snus. The use of nicotine products has also increased among girls and young women. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of these phenomena and to provide young people and their families with reliable information.

Jakobstad’s preventive substance abuse work emphasises raising awareness and encourages schools, families, and other stakeholders to support young people towards a nicotine-free everyday life.
