Architectural sights

There are several architecturally interesting buildings in Jakobstad. What about going for an architectural walk? You can easily explore the architectural gems of Jakobstad on foot.

Jakobstad Fire Station resembles the Stockholm Olympic Stadium and the buildings are in fact designed by the same architect, Torben Grut. Jakobstad’s beautiful water tower is designed by Lars Sonck and the Art Nouveau building of Jakobstad gymnasium by Bertel Jung.

Östanlid sanatorium, a former tuberculosis sanatorium, represents functionalism. It is an example of how the knowledge of health care had an impact on hospital architecture during the first decades of the 1900s. Östanlid sanatorium has big balconies and windows and it is located in an area with xeric heath forest where the patients could enjoy the only then known cure for tuberculosis: clean air and sunshine.
